Ayoyo! Must Wait so long kah?!!!!

“Lord – is it true that a thousand years for us is just like a minute to you?”
“Yes”
“Then a million dollars to us must just be a penny to you.”
“Yes”
“Lord, would you give me one of those pennies?”
“All right. Wait here a minute.”

Too often we want God’s resources, but we do not want his timing. We want the penny, but not the minute.

We forget that his work in us while we wait is as important as what it is we think we are waiting for. Waiting means that we give God the benefit of the doubt that He knows what He is doing.

It must be patient trust – trust that is willing to wait again and again day after day.

Maybe you are single.

Maybe you feel a legitimate longing for intimacy.

Maybe you feel a kind of loneliness that only God can heal, that another human being cannot rescue you from.

Waiting is so hard.

Maybe there is a potential relationship right at your fingertips, but you know it would not be honoring to God. Maybe you know in your heart it is not really the right person because that person does not share your ultimate commitment to God. Maybe that person is putting pressure on you to be involved sexually.

You are tempted to think, “I have been waiting long enough. I’m tired of waiting. I’m going to reach out for whatever satisfaction I can in this life and worry about the consequences later.”

Maybe you have a dream about certain accomplishments - it involves your work or an area of ministry. What you hoped for is not happening - you don't know why, but you know it hurts. You are tempted to force it - to push, manipulate, or scheme to get what you want.

Or perhaps you are tempted to give up ever trying to realize the potential God has given you and just drift. Will you have the patience not to force it, not to quit, but to wait patiently, to continue to learn about your giftedness, humbly receive feedback and coaching from others, grow one step at a time, and trust God's plan rather than what you think is your need.

Will you wait on the Lord?

What does it look like to wait with patient trust?

Henri Nouwen gave us a picture of patient trust not long before he died in 1996. Writing about some trapeze artists who became good friends of his, he explained that there is a very special relationship between the flyer and the catcher. (This does not surprise me. If I were the flyer, I would want to become a very good friend of the catcher. I would work very hard to make sure there were no lingering resentments on his part. I would want the catcher to like me a lot).

“The flyer must never try to catch the catcher” the trapeze artist told Nouwen. “He must wait in absolute trust. The catcher will catch him. But he must wait. His job is not to flail about in anxiety. In fact, if he does, it would kill him. His job is to be still. To wait. And to wait is the hardest work of all.”

You may be in that vulnerable moment right now – you have let go of what God has called you to let go of, but you can’t feel God’s other hand catching you yet. Will you wait in absolute trust? Will you be patient? Waiting requires patient trust.
